Right after the dinner Maria got a phone call. Havu was looking at her. She didn’t know if she had to answer or not. If yes, she would ruin the evening of her husband. She couldn’t do it. He made a huge effort. The phone stopped to ring. She was relieved. But suddenly it rang again. It was maybe urgent. “Why don’t you answer?” Janne asked. “Sweetheart, it’s your evening. I don’t want to ruin it.” “How a phone call can do that? Answer,” he requested. “Hi...” she shyly answered. Janne didn’t know why but he didn’t like it. His wife wasn’t a shy person. If she behaved that way it was because she felt guilty. He crossed his arms and looked. She was really uncomfortable. “It was Rane, isn’t it?” he asked seriously. “Well... it wasn’t important.” “And he asked you to come to his place. Am I right?” Maria was really not at ease. She didn’t know what to answer. “Go, go there. But take some extra clothes. Maybe the door will be close when you will be back,” he threatened and the tears came to her eyes. “Janne, please don’t do it,” she begged. “You did it to me when you were so sure that I was cheating with Nina. I have no evidence that you are cheating with him but I saw enough. How many hours per day do you spend with that guy?” Havu asked, quite disgusted. “You don’t understand! I was there to help him. He is depressed. He lost his wife!” “Oh come on! It was more than three months ago. I know that he has more money than me and I also know that women love money!” he replied. “I’m not that kind of woman! I thought that you knew me after all these years together. I think that we need a break and think about us. Tonight I’m going to his place. But not longer. I promise.” “Do whatever you want. It’s not my business anymore. Good night,” he said before to take a beer in the fridge.

Rane comforted Maria how he could. He prepared some tea and put a cover on her shoulders. He heard her story while she was emptying the tissue box which was on the table. “This is my fault. I’m so sorry. I promise that this won’t happen again.” “How?” she asked while some tears were running on her cheeks. “I’m problematic for many people. I create jealousies, suspicions and quarrels. I don’t want to destroy your marriage with Janne. You are a wonderful couple. You have to live together.” “What will you do?” she asked shyly. “I will leave the country. I will go back to Gran Canarias.” “But what about your bars? Your family? Your house?” “Don’t worry. I will come over sometimes. I will check my bars from the island like I do it here. I don’t need anymore to be onsite. Teemu will come with me. I know that my family in law will not like it but I’m the father. I will keep the house here at least for some time. You can keep the key and come whenever you want.” “Will you leave with Tiia?” “No. She is not anymore the Tiia I loved. I will just give her some money and that’s it. It’s over between us. Since three days. I understood that she was there just for the money. Not like you. You are my best friend. And I’ll be always there for you.” “Is it your way to say goodbye?” she asked with tears in the eyes. “I have to leave,” he murmured before to kiss her hair and to hug.

15. I already miss you

September 16th

Janne Happonen was at the police station ordering all the papers that were on his desk. These past days he had been quite busy and didn’t have time to tidy his workplace. His teammate Juhanni Vartanen was in sick leave since two weeks and his new teammate was young and incompetent. He was stupid in Havu’s point of view. He always said that he understood his explanations and less than three minutes later he did exactly the opposite. He wondered what they were learning at university or at the police school.

After his forth coffee around ten his supervisor asked him to come to his desk. He filled his cup at the machine and came with a warm coffee in the office that smelled cigarette. Juhanni was sat on one of the uncomfortable chairs for visitors. The other was for Havu. “Hi Juhanni. Nice to see you again,” Janne told. “Happonen, I quit the police,” the old policeman announced, straight to the point. These words came to Havu’s face like a slap. “No, you can’t... Police is your life. You did so many great things. You arrested so many criminals. You are so good in solving cases. And you are not too old,” Janne argued. “Janne, I’m done. I did my best but I can’t do it anymore. What’s the point to arrest someone who finds a stupid lawyer that helps him to get out in less than three days and starts again? I believed in human being. I thought that everybody was good and deserved a second chance. It was just that some people needed to be caught to realize that they were not behaving right. But it was an illusion. Real world is cruel and the justice is not severe enough. Look at that man who killed his wife with a hammer. How can someone do that to the person he loved more than anyone else few years ago? Did you hear that he will stay only two years in prison? Or this woman who burnt her child because she didn’t want to share with her ex-husband. I need to go far from the craziness of this world before to get mad. I will go to my cottage somewhere near Tampere and just fish. Goodbye Happonen. It was a pleasure to be your teammate during all these years,” Juhanni told. “And the Russian mafia case? Don’t you want to solve it was highlight of your career?” The old man smiled. “It’s your case. My highlight was the arrest of the terrorists who wanted to bomb the parliament three years before you entered the unit. Good luck in your investigations. I’m sure that you will succeed. Be patient and not impulsive. It’s hard to admit but you are the best teammate I ever had.” After these words, the teammates hugged. “I already miss you,” Havu whispered. “Don’t cry little boy.” “I’m not crying. It’s just... the emotion,” Janne replied while he quickly erased a tear that was coming to his eye.

When it was time to leave the police station Havu went to the car park. The day had been calm. He was all the time at the station except after lunch. He had to go to Pasila to interrogate some witnesses about the theft of three bicycles. “Do you have time for a beer?” Janne looked behind him and saw is ex-teammate. “Yes, sure,” he confirmed. They didn’t go far away. Just few streets further in a small bar. They ordered a beer and some French fries as a snack. “Don’t be sad, boy. Be happy for me. I’m finally a free man after 35 years in that house,” Juhanni said to Janne who was playing with a potato. “Of course I’m happy for you even if I don’t show it. But currently this is bad news for me. My life is a mess. Nothing goes right at home, my friends don’t seem to trust me anymore and at work I had some bad moments. I don’t like my new teammate. You were the only one to help me. You are a model, an icon for me. You are the best cop I ever met. You are always right. I wish I was like you. But it’s not the case. At the moment I doubt of everything. I need a reference.” “I’m sorry to quit my job but I had to. I was almost burnt out when I said to the supervisor that he was an asshole. Too much is too much. My doctor told me to choose between my job and my life. Honestly it’s not difficult. Previously I always chose my job. I sacrificed my family, my hobbies and most of my friends. For what? A miserable salary compared to the risks we take. Are you still mad at me?” “No, I’m not,” Janne replied, the fist on his cheek. He was looking by the window and thinking of his situation. He would love to do like Juhanni but he was too young. He still had to work for long years and he didn’t know what else he could do.

“It’s time to say goodbye. I wish you all the best in your life and hope that you will kick the asses of the Russians,” Juhanni said with a wide smile. “Thanks. I think that you will read it in the newspapers if I succeed one day.” “You will. I’m sure about it. You know why? Because I was your professor!” Janne hugged his mentor and wished a beautiful retirement and a lot of success in his favourite activity: fishing. Vartanen walked in the street and turned left at the corner. “I already miss you,” Janne murmured. He had the feeling that it was like to break up. His professional relationship was over. His heart was broken. It was painful. Juhanni was more than a colleague. He was like his father. On the way he hit a trash bin. He was angry and sad.

16. Biggest discovery ever

September 22nd

It was a quiet Thursday. The sun was still there and the temperature was still acceptable for the month of September. The trees were red, orange or yellow. It was wonderful.

Nina Olli was driving her car to the countryside. She knew that that day was special. She was stressed but also full of hopes. In her mind she was remembering what she would have to say to the world. Half an hour later she opened the door of a dark room. “Are you ready?” she asked. “I think so. What will happen?” “The whole world will know that I’m the greatest scientist. I will tell them what I did. But don’t worry. You will stay anonymous,” she explained. “I want to go home.” She simply smiled while she looked at the video camera which was installed in the room. “When you’ll get the message, sit on the chair,” she said. “I’m scared.” “Don’t be. Everything will be fine. Just read the paper. No improvising. I’m sure that you will do well,” she reassured before to leave the room and to drive back to the city.

Nina was wearing an elegant suite and was just back from the hair dresser. She wanted to look perfect. It was not so often that it happened to her. She was someone simple who was not a fashion victim and didn’t spend hours in the bathroom. Saara was at Katrina’s place and would stay there maybe two days. She was sat in front of her mirror and was wearing earrings. She couldn’t remember that they were quite heavy. But they looked nice. She smiled when she reminded the day when Harri gave them to her before they got married. It was the first time that he offered a so expensive gift to a woman. She missed that time. They were so happy. But he was not there anymore. Tami killed her husband twice. The first time was because he convinced him to go to the basement and to look at what she was doing. She remembered the moment he felt on the floor after the injection she had to do to stop him. She was haunted by the way he looked at her. He didn’t know what was going on. And two years later Tami let him die like a dog in the street. She couldn’t forgive. A tear was running on her cheek and she erased it quickly. She took some blush and tried to erase the path it took. She decided to wear her wedding ring. Harri had to be with her for that particular moment.

A taxi was waiting for her outside. She jumped in it and he drove her to the university where all the most important scientists of the world and the media were waiting for her. In the car she was looking at her notes. She was stressed. She was not used to talk to people. She preferred to be alone in her lab. But for that special occasion she trained in front of her mirror. She was touching her ring and was wishing that her husband would help her. The taxi stopped in front of the back door. The director of the university was waiting for her and warmly welcomed. He was over seventy years old, small and fat with a rounded face. He had some thick moustache and rounded glasses. He was wearing a swallow-tailed and a top hat. Some photographers were already there and taking the first pictures. She tried to smile but she was too stressed.

She followed the director in a small room. “Everything is ready as you wanted. The media are ready to record. They can’t wait for you when you said that you will announce the greatest scientific discovery of the history. We are all really excited,” he said with a wide smile. “You won’t be disappointed,” she said before to drink a glass of water. There was also some champagne but she preferred to avoid alcohol before the speech.

At eight o’clock she entered on the stage under a roar of applause. She was wearing high heels but not too high. She was not used to wear this kind of shoes. She was still stressed when she was behind the lectern with the microphone so close and all the cameras fixing her. There was a huge silence in the room. All the Finnish families who were waiting for the movie were looking at the professor Nina Olli. For those who didn’t know who she was they would know and for the others it was a surprise. Except for the family Happonen who was waiting for that day for months. It would be the end of the secrets.

“Good evening everybody. I’m the professor Nina Olli,” she presented after have breathed deeply. There was a little echo in the huge auditorium. “I worked for years on a big project. Something that everybody dreamt about. And now that dream is coming true. I’ve raised from death a man.” After these words, the scientists and journalists were talking at the same time and it was a huge chaos. When it was calm again she continued quietly. “First I got some results with a rat about eight years ago. You can look at the video on the screen. Then I decided to go further in my laboratory and then to experiment it on a human. First I tested on cells. The results were promising. Few years later I used a human specimen. Everyday I checked the evolution. The results were perfectly similar as with the rats. The hope was huge that he would wake up. And one day his heart beat again. His cerebral activity was coming back to normal. Now he can talk, he can walk and remembers his old life.” There was still a lot of agitation in the room. People were under shock but also very curious. They wanted to know more. Nina knew that she did something enormous and that this day was historical.

“Let’s see if the connection is good,” she said while a technician activated the camera. After few seconds the world discovered a man sat on a chair in the shadow. There was light coming from the side but it was impossible to see his face. “Here is Lauri. Can you hear us?” Nina said. Arttu Lappi couldn’t believe it. He immediately recognized the man who visited him in the night. But he didn’t know any Lauri. It was maybe a fake name. “Yes, I can hear you,” he answered with his deep voice. “Can you tell us how it was to come back?” Nina asked. “Well it was almost like to wake up in the morning for any of you. I just slept for three years. I needed some weeks to be able to move. My muscles were quite weak. I started to speak after... three weeks if I’m not wrong. My memory came back little by little. Nina helped me a lot by telling me stories of my life and showing some pictures,” he explained. “How was it after the death?” a journalist asked. “I can’t remember. I just know that sometimes I was here. I was looking at my friends,” he confessed. Nina couldn’t believe it. He was not supposed to tell it. It was not on the paper and now it was too late. She was angry and under high stress. She knew that people would mainly remember that confession and would almost forget about her discovery. “Does it mean that there are ghosts everywhere? So you confirm that they exist? How many are here?” Lauri seemed to be really confused and was probably waiting for the help of Nina. “We will answer these questions in the discussion after the TV transmission,” she announced to save the situation.

The next day in the newspapers people could read some enthusiastic comments: “The greatest scientist comes from Finland.” “Raised from death.” “A man from the other side is with us.” “Can we be immortal?” “New hope for many unjustified death.” But also some negative titles such as: “Who is Lauri?” “Biggest discovery ever or biggest hoax?” “Open door to all excesses.” “Monsters.” Janne Happonen arrived at work a little bit before eight o’clock. He saw that at the second floor of the police station there were already a lot of happenings. Many phones were ringing, some people were running to the fax to collect documents and others were going to the meeting room. Like every morning he filled his cup with the horrible coffee of the machine and went back to his desk. He just had time to turn on his computer that his supervisor asked to join the meeting room number 4. He took his note pad, his pen, his coffee and joined the others. “It seems that people are going crazy. I guess that you heard about the announcement of yesterday evening?” the supervisor asked. He was over sixty with white hair and seemed to be really stressed. He smelled cigar. “Some people burnt a church, some other broke some windows in town and some others committed murders or raps. Lintunen and Jussila go to Munkkiniemi and look at that group suicide which look suspect. When you are finished go to Huopalahti and interrogate the neighbours about these cars who burnt last night. Happonen and Salonen go to the forest of Vanha Kaupunki. Three people hanged themselves. It’s probably a suicide as well but I want to be sure that it’s not a murder. Then later, go to help Kulminen about the rap of two teenagers,” he listed and his inspectors wrote everything in their notepad. “Go! What are you waiting for!” the supervisor almost shouted at them and the four inspectors left the room and jumped in their cars which were in the underground car park.

During the whole day everybody wanted to talk to Nina: scientists, journalists but also some people who had the hope that she can raise from death a beloved who died too early. Some people were ready to pay millions of Euros if she accepted. She was at home and was looking at the window behind the curtains. She never expected that she would lose her privacy. In the house she was not alone. There was her banker and her lawyer who proposed to be her manager. Apparently the poor scientist had no clue how to deal with these people who wanted to talk to her. She accepted few interviews. She thought that if they got what they wanted they would let her in peace. But they all wanted the same: to meet Lauri. But she refused. Lauri wanted to stay anonymous and it was definitively too dangerous for him to go outside. She already got some letters which threatened to kill him and also her. She was a bit scared. Where these people serious? When she wanted to go out, she was escorted like a president. It was an honour but she also felt stalked like an animal.

In the evening she had the visit of someone she never thought would come: Janne Ahonen. “Please, come in,” she said when the lawyer told her who was there. She made some tea and they sat in the living room. After the announcement he took the first flight to Helsinki to talk to her. “I was not expecting your visit,” she said. “I know. I haven’t been a real good friend and I apologize. It’s... it’s amazing what you did. How is that possible?” he asked a bit perplexed. “It’s a long work. I needed many years to succeed. It’s not magic. It’s just hard work,” she answered. He stayed silence for long minutes. He was probably thinking of the way to formulate his request. She could feel it when she was looking at him. He didn’t come just to greet. Nobody except maybe Happonen was coming to visit without interest. She decided to wait. “Do you think that you can do again what you did with Lauri?” he finally asked and she smiled. She knew that he would ask something like that. “I don’t know yet,” she answered vaguely. “How much do you want? I can give you all what I have. I can already give you some now.” He seemed to be serious. She knew that he wanted to have his wife back. “No I can’t. You can give me one million Euros, I can’t accept. She is already buried,” she answered and he was a bit surprised. “Do you mean that Lauri never went to the cemetery?” “Right. And this was important. I needed his body right after the death. After the body starts very quickly to change and you can do nothing against it,” she explained. “But how did you get his body?” he asked curious and she smiled. “He gave it to me. We had an agreement.” “But how did he know that he would die? Did he commit suicide?” Janne asked a bit confused. He didn’t understand all what this raise to death meant. “He was sick and there was no hope for him. It was just a matter of time. Do you have anything else to ask?” Janne looked at the living room, a bit lost. “When did he die?” “I don’t remember exactly. In early 2023. January or February. Something like this. Yeah I know. I needed a lot of time before to succeed,” she explained proud of her. “But have you thought that... I mean in case you failed?” “I knew what I was doing.” “Was your lab in the basement?” “Janne, I think that you should go. I’m waiting for a journalist from BBC,” she politely requested.

When he left he felt the needed to talk. But to who? He just went to town and ordered a beer in a bar after dinner. It was the first time since a long time and he didn’t remember how nice the feeling of fresh beer going down in the stomach was. He was looking at his glass and thought that it was the end of all hope. Leena would never comeback. It was already quite late. Some people were already totally drunk and looked ridiculous. He remembered that some years ago he wouldn’t be different. He understood better why nobody wanted to be his friend. “Janne!” When he heard his name he turned and saw Arttu Lappi who sat at his table with his glass of beer. “What are you doing here alone?” Janne asked. “I’m with two colleagues. We were playing Black Jack. I think that I drank a bit too much and I’m unable to count to 21. I lost all my money and I went to order a forth beer. And now I’m with you. And you? What are you doing here?” the lawyer with reddish cheeks asked. “Well... I went to visit Nina and then I felt that I needed a beer.” After these words Arttu laughed. A beer after Nina seemed to be mandatory. This woman had no heart and was cold like ice. “I was thinking that Harri died because of Lauri. He was in the basement,” Janne said. “Are you sure that he was there?” Arttu asked. “Yes, she didn’t answer my question. If it was wrong she would say no. Do you know who is this Lauri?” “No, no idea,” Arttu said while he was thinking. “There is something I don’t get,” Janne added while he looked at his glass. “Why didn’t she save Harri? She said that she raised Lauri from death because he wasn’t buried. Why didn’t she do it for her husband? Especially because his death was unfair,” Janne told. “Maybe because he was too damaged. I mean that his brain was not working at hundred percent. Nevertheless he made great progress the last months,” the lawyer said. “How do you know it?” “He was at my place,” Arttu confessed. When he realized it he was mad at him. Luckily Janne wasn’t a close friend of Nina. “But please, keep it for you. Don’t repeat it,” Arttu requested and Janne promised. “What else do you know about Lauri?” the lawyer asked. “I know that he was sick and he knew that he would die. He gave his body to Nina. And he died in the early 2023. She can’t remember exactly when.” Arttu was thinking. Suddenly his mind was clear. 2023, sick, to give the body. “I sold my body and soul. To the devil?” he murmured to himself and Janne didn’t get it. “What are you talking about Arttu?” “I know who is Lauri!” he exclaimed while he hit his glass which fell from the table and broke on the sticky floor. “Thank you Janne,” he said before to get up and take back his coat in the cloak room.

When he was at home he switched on the light of his computer room. He opened the drawer and took a notepad, a pen and the note of Harri. He was looking at the reverse star. Nina was working for years on the project maybe already before to know Harri. Then she needed a human guinea piggy. She met Matti who was sick. After have discovered his illness he regretted his stupid life. He wanted a second chance and confessed that he had money. First he sold his car and then his flat. He died and Nina got his body. How? That was a mystery. He was then in the basement transformed in a lab. Harri was solving some chemical equations for her. She needed his help. But then he became too curious. He had to go out of the game. Then Havu. What was his role in the plan? Arttu looked a bit closer at the star. He remembered that the three points down are the trinity. Saara was there with the names of Janne and Matti. He knew that the mother was Nina. But who was the father? He was quite sure that it was Havu. But why not Matti? Could he be father while he was... dead? But in a way, nothing was surprising with Nina. He was also thinking that Matti was the toy of Nina. He was having revenge for her. Maybe he had to do what she wanted because she gave him a second chance? Arttu hid again all the documents. He knew that he was in danger. Matti knew how to enter silently in his house. He could kill him while he was sleeping very easily. Before to go to his bedroom he sent a message to his daughter and asked to be really careful. He checked that the door and all the windows were closed. Pillow was looking at him from his basket in the living room. He didn’t get why his owner looked so stressed. He would definitively never understand human’s emotions.

The end
